The NY Times is reporting today that Medicare has paid $92 million to more than 18,000 doctors who died years before they performed health services on patients. This is the startling finding of a new congressional report that reveals practicing medicine in the United States -- and being paid for it -- does not require you to actually be living! (Aha! That's why doctors always seem brain dead...)

This business model is apparently even more lucrative than farmers who are paid money by the U.S. Dept. of Agriculture to NOT grow crops: One dead doctor raked in $479,000 in Medicare payments for services rendered in 2002 to 2007. Mysteriously, the doctor died in 1999.
According to this congressional report, Medicare has paid out as much as $92 million to 18,240 dead doctors. A frighteningly large percentage of those doctors (16 percent) have been dead for 10 to 15 years! (This is all factual, by the way. You can read about it in the NY Times:
